Decorative
fireplace doors oftentimes give your fireplace the completed, stylish
look that you are striving for. Perhaps you have been staring at
your fireplace, wondering what you could do to improve its overall
look. Have you thought about adding decorative fireplace doors?
They are often the perfect solution to an otherwise ordinary fireplace.
Here are some types of decorative fireplace doors that
you may want to considered adding:
- Mesh decorative fireplace doors. These are doors that are still
going to protect your home from unruly sparks, but they are not
going to help much with the problems of heat escaping up your
chimney. Generally, mesh fireplace doors cost less money than
glass ones. Many styles are available with either mesh or glass
doors.
- Tempered glass decorative fireplace doors. Tempered glass acting
as a barrier between your home and your fireplace is going to
make your home more energy efficient – warm air is not going
to be sucked up your chimney: you are not going to be paying to
heat your chimney.
- Ceramic glass decorative fireplace doors. Ceramic glass allows
more radiant heat to pass through than tempered glass does –
it is therefore going to allow your room to be heated better.
Also, where as tempered glass stands the chance of being heated
unevenly and therefore could crack, ceramic glass is highly heat
resistant. It is also a bit more pricey.
- Etched glass decorative fireplace doors. Such doors can be
very intriguing. You can buy ready made etched glass doors, or
you can even commission a company or a person to etch a specific
design or scene into the glass.
- Decorative fireplace doors with metal accents. There are many
beautiful doors that have designs added to them made of steel
or other materials. Many of these designs involve nature scenes,
like two elk in the mountains. Other designs are more abstract.
Generally, you are left with many options with these types of
doors – besides deciding what kind of scene or design you
want the forged iron or steel, etc. to depict, you can also decide
upon the finishes. For instance, you may want a satin black, polished
brass, polished nickel, antique copper, or antique brass, etc.
finish.
Realize that the best fitting decorative fireplace doors (and therefore
the most energy efficient in terms of glass doors) are ones that
are installed in new homes before plastering. Of course, it is still
very possible to retro-fit decorative fireplace doors for existing
fireplaces, and they can look just as beautiful.
